What 2 little girls can do…

November 14, 2008 at 12:43 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 9 Comments

This is our basement playroom.  At the moment it’s probably even messier than when I took this picture a few weeks ago.   I need to get down with the girls one of these days and clean it up (again).  It’s been cleaned up and re-messed up so many times….

I have to laugh (or cry?) when I read comments about my 101 Things list, how productive or ambitious or whatever I am.  HA HA!   I feel like my life resembles the above picture.  My house is a mess, my To Do list is a mile long and I rarely make a dent in it, I’m so unorganized, it’s pathetic.   One of these days I need to get my act together….maybe tomorrow (yeah right).

EDITED TO ADD: Thanks for all your comments!  I agree with spending time with the kids and not worrying so much about the house!  I do spend lot of time with the girls and believe me, I am not overlooking them to clean the house!  BUT…when your bedroom is a totally uninviting place because there is crap everywhere, when you can’t find something you really need because the piles are too big and there are too many of them, when you neglect to do something you were supposed to do because the piece of paper that tells you about it is buried somewhere, when things are just a bit dirtier than they should be for sanitary purposes (i.e. the dust bunnies are piling up high because you can’t get at the surface to dust), well let me tell you it is not fun to live that way!   If things were more in order and I was a little more organized, it would free me up to spend more time with the kids!  So there is a balance there that I am looking for and I am losing the clutter war.

101 Things List Update

November 7, 2008 at 2:37 pm | Posted in 101 Things | 2 Comments
I edited my 101 Things list just a bit.  I won’t do this again, it’s not like I’m going to keep adjusting it if I’m struggling with some of it.  BUT, there are a few things that I’m supposed to do monthly, that I know just aren’t going to happen that often.  Rather than get frustrated that only 2 months into this there’s no way I can meet my goal on these things, I just tweaked them a little.  Here’s what I changed:

#31 changed to clean out the refrigerator/freezer 12 times instead of once a month. This is about 4 times a year.  I’ll admit I probably don’t even do it 4 times a year!  So it’s still a challenging goal for me, yet more reasonable.

#33 changed to go on a date with Jay 27 times instead of once a month. This gives us 6 months less than every month, to allow for those months that are just too busy or we can’t find a sitter or whatever.  Jay was out of town one week last month, and I forgot about this one, ooops!  Better luck this month!

#34 changed to taking a picture of me and Jay, or the whole family, every 3 months instead of once a month. A little more realistic yet way more than we were doing!  (which was almost never)

#91 changed to brush Chester at least once a month instead of twice a month. Then I can strive for doing it more than once, but if I don’t remember, I’m not behind.  He really should be brushed several times a WEEK, especially when his hair is longer, but I always forget, what can I say.   He doesn’t get matted or anything.  His fur still smells delicious. 🙂

So here’s my (pathetic) October progress on my list.  I’m going to pick one or two things this month and try to make a real effort to make some headway on them.
#4 Knit 10 pair of socks. – Finished one Monkey sock and don’t want to make the second.  So I’m back to square one for this item.  I bought a skein of sock yarn though, so there’s that.

#5 Knit 3 items for charity. I started a wheelchair afghan that I want to donate to the nursing home my dad lived in.  I’m making it out of Plymouth Encore using the Plymouth Yarn Company Lap Throw With Top Ties pattern.

#10 Save $100 in change.Added about 50 cents to my total  Woopee.

#30 Memorize 4 chapters of the Bible – 1 OT, 1 Psalm, 1 Proverb, 1 NT. – Almost have verse 1 and 2 memorized of Isaiah 40.  This is going to be much harder than I thought!!!

#42 Declutter: sell or give away 101 material items I own. – I put a pair of my old shoes in the Goodwill pile.  Wow, such progress.

#47 Photograph girls on the 30th of each month. – Hey I never said it was going to be a “perfectly serious picture! 🙂

#56 Eat out at 5 new restaurants. – Ate at Tijuana Rose when in Manitowoc for my annual “Packers Bye Week” trip with my sister Ginny.  It was very good but pricey!  I think we paid $12? for a burrito.

#90 Complete Bible studies using all the methods in my Rick Warren’s Bible Study Methods book. – Started back with 2 Timothy 2, Chapter Summary Method, haven’t gotten very far though!

#91 Brush Chester at least once a month. – Did this once and again he hated it.  He cries!

#99 Finish reading through The Message Bible. – Slow going but I was about halfway through Proverbs at the end of October.

I am slowly becoming addicted to Facebook!  Just what I need, another thing to suck time out of my day that I really don’t have!  But it’s a lot of fun and I can see myself getting more active there.  Let me know if you’re there!

Election Day!

Personal opinions contained in this post!    I respect your right to disagree with me but I won’t debate or argue here…

Ben watched the girls this morning while I went to vote.  I don’t have any problems saying who I voted for – McCain/Palin.**  Not a perfect candidate (who is) but the best choice in my opinion.  I used to be a “one issue” voter and that issue is abortion.  I would not vote for anyone who is pro-abortion.  I now have mixed feelings about that – I feel like abortion is a matter of the heart and changing hearts is the way to prevent abortions rather than by legal means.  Then again if a law stops even one woman from having one….  But just the same it’s God changing hearts and not laws that is the most important thing.

So I don’t know that I wouldn’t vote for someone just because they are pro-abortion.  On the other hand, I think it would be very hard to do so!  Because I think their opinion on abortion says a lot about the rest of their beliefs.  So while I will never say never, I doubt I will ever vote for a pro-abortion candidate, especially for president.

Ben voted for the first time today!  I still can’t believe I have an adult child!  I remember voting for the first time with my dad.  It was 1984.  We voted at a school.  I voted for Reagan.  🙂

All that said, I really don’t like politics.  I especially hate all the political ads!  They are almost comical in a  way.  Each side acts like the other is stupid or pure evil.  They act like voters are stupid.   We’d have to be to believe all the stuff they say in those ads!  I just can’t wait for this all to be over!

**I don’t know if I completely understand what is so secretive about who you vote for….someone enlighten me if you want!

Now that everyone else has posted about their Halloween and moved on to the next thing, I’m finally getting around to writing about it.  Story of my life now, always behind!

Halloween is not my favorite holiday by any means.  For years we wouldn’t participate in it at all.  I’m just not crazy about all the gory, icky decorations and spooky costumes.  And all the candy!  I have such a sweet tooth and I have a hard time resisting – I can’t believe how much candy I have eaten in the past few days.  It’s awful.  And of course, my girls do NOT need candy either!  Lindsey has thousands of dollars of dental work in her mouth (2 crowns, 1 bridge, lots of fillings) and we don’t need Allison to follow in her sister’s footsteps that way.  But oh well, we have softened our stance on Halloween as far as not participating at all, but I’m still not super crazy about it.

That said Lindsey had a blast and both girls looked darling in their costumes.   And the weather!  It was warm!  Yea!  Many years it is so cold, or even snowing, and all those creative and cute costumes get covered up by winter coats!  But this year it was beautiful outside, no coats required.  (And it’s supposed to be 70 degree tomorrow!  It’s warmer here right now as I write this than in NC where my good friend Tamara lives – shout out to Tamara and family!)

Despite the gore and the candy and the hecticness (is that a word? LOL) one really great thing came out of the holiday this year – Allison learned to say “thank you”!   After me and Lindsey saying thank you a bunch of times as we left each house, all of a sudden I hear Allison say “sake you!”  It was so cute!  I have been trying to teach her to say thank you for a long long time.  Her speech has really been improving by leaps and bounds lately.  She still has such a long way to go but she is progressing!  She has been perfecting her “Go Pack Go” too, although it was of little help yesterday. 😦

Back to the candy…..I was so proud of myself that I actually had my act together and planned ahead.  I bought a whole bunch of candy early in the month to give out on Halloween because last year I ran out of candy.   Then I found out Jay would be coming home from a week out of town on Halloween night.  So no one was here when I took the girls trick or treating, then when we got home we had to go to the airport to pick him up.  By the time we got home, the mad rush was over and we  only got 3 sets of trick or treaters.  Which means I have a TON of candy left over!  Sigh….
