Happy Gotcha Day Allison!

October 30, 2008 at 1:01 pm | Posted in Adoption, Allison | 4 Comments

Two years ago today in Kunming, China, we met our little Allison for the first time.   At 12 months she couldn’t roll over or crawl, could barely sit up, and had the worst fish breath imaginable. LOL   She has come a long way!

Allison’s Gotcha Day was very different from Lindsey’s.    When we got Allison, we were the only family in that province; with Lindsey there were several other families adopting.  With Allison, things were quiet; with Lindsey it was more chaotic.   With Allison, the final paperwork was done right away so she was legally our daughter within hours of meeting her; with Lindsey the final paperwork was done the next day (her first birthday).   For Allison’s adoption it was me, Jay, Lindsey, and my sister Ginny; for Lindsey’s it was me, Jay, and Jay’s mom.  Allison’s was in the fall with beautiful, perfect temperature weather; Lindsey’s was in the summer with sweltering heat.  Two very different experiences, two VERY different girls, two special blessings!

We’re so happy to have you in our family, Allison!

So I’ve been there tons of times and driven past many more, but there is nothing like coming off Highway 41, turning onto Lombardi Avenue, and it comes into view…..

The girls and Ben and I drove to Green Bay this morning to go to the Packers Pro Shop.

No matter how many times I’ve been to Lambeau, my heart always goes pitter pat when I see the stadium.  I love it!  Football rocks!  I even have Allison saying “Doe Baaa Doe!”  LOL

Bart Starr and I go way back….

He’s friends with Lindsey too…

I love Aaron Rodgers!!!!!

Look mom!  It’s Curly Lambeau!

And Vince…

I bought these for the girls (and a shirt and a hair pretty for Lindsey, and a Packers Media Guide for me)…

…We take our opposition
And crunch ’em like they’re crackers
That’s why I love my Green Bay Packers!

I was pretty over the moon when I got my first iPod a year and a half ago:

But then last month I got this:

I never cared that much about having a cell phone but then when my mom was sick I got one so I could always be reached if something happened.  I couldn’t figure out what the big deal with text messaging was, but then I got this….

Now I’m a texting fool!  (this has a keyboard that slides out, forgot to take a pic of that)

And then of course there was my pathetic “was nice when we bought it but became a dinosaur” camera.  I had been wanting a new one for awhile, and last month got this:

It’s so lightweight and works so much better than my old one.  It’s nothing fancy but I’m very happy with it!

Do you think Lindsey should get an iPod Touch???

I learned to crochet about 12? years ago.  I know I taught Ben when he was 8, which was 10 years ago, and that was probably when I had been crocheting a year or two.  I learned to knit just over a year ago, August 2007.   I love(d) to crochet but I have been addicted to knitting in a way I never was with crochet.  I will crochet again someday, but for now it is “all knitting, all the time”.  Except I don’t knit very often!  That will change some day, but for now I do what I can.  I do think about knitting, read about knitting, and listen to podcasts about knitting, every day.

Here are some pics of what has been going on in my knitting world.  I finally finished the Monkey sock I’d been knitting on for forever!  I was so tired of making it by the end, that I rushed it, knit right through a knot in the yarn, and then proceeded to graft the toe wrong.  It’s not totally unwearable that way but close.  I have NO desire to knit the second sock!  Maybe someday, maybe not.  This sock just may be lonely all its life.  I’m not crazy about it anyway.  It’s pretty, but I don’t like the heel and it’s just a bit big, and there’s the whole toe thing.  LOL

I made 2 felted bags early in the year but didn’t actually felt them until a month or so ago.   There are pics of them before and after felting.  I have yet to use either of them.  I think I want to put a snap closure on the purple one.  I made one more bag that needs to be sewn up the sides and then felted.  I’m not sure how to sew it up nice so it’s just been sitting there for the past month or more.  (The other 2 were knit in the round so I didn’t have to do this step!).

The purple yarn is a ball of Cotlin.  I’m almost finished making a face cloth with it, just have the last 2 rows to knit, bind off, and sew in the ends.  I made a face cloth with Cotlin in a fuschia color and it is so soft.  I hope to make myself a bunch of them in different patterns.  I have a ball of Cotlin in a cofee color on its way along with a pair of size 13 circs.

Then there’s the mittens I’ve been wanting to make for over a month now!  I have yarn to make myself a pair and to make some for the girls.  They were going to be my “learn to use DPNs” project but I can’t figure them out!  What a tangled mess!  I can’t figure out how to get the needles straight after casting on and dividing the stitches, but I’ll keep trying….

I hope to do more regular knitting updates…

*Just after I started typing this post, my new ball winder came!  Thanks Jay!  He bought it for me for my birthday (last month, 9/28).  And thanks to Vicki from my knitting group who gave me a swift!  I will take a picture of both and post them another time.

Allison had her first day of speech class today!

Her backpack is almost bigger than her!!!

The bus picks her up right at the end of our driveway.  She was a little tentative getting on and seemed a bit scared, but she didn’t cry and said “see ya” after I buckled her up and was walking off the bus.

Her teacher called me after class was over while Allison was on the way home.  She said she did great.  She had to coax her to use her words a lot (no big surprise!).  Many times when I ask Allison to use her words she will tell me “no” or “shhh!”.   She did the same to her teacher. 🙂  But her teacher said she did say the word for what she wanted in the end.  This class started at the beginning of the school year but Allison could not attend until she turned 3.  So the other 3 kids (all boys!) in her class have been going for over a month now.  The teacher said she thought she might have to modify things somewhat for Allison since it was her first day but she didn’t have to at all.  Allison did all that was expected of her.   It is SO sweet!!!

When the bus dropped her off, the bus driver said she did just fine!  Allison greeted me with a smile.   I am so relieved.  I didn’t really think she would cry but I wasn’t sure.  I didn’t sleep very good the last few hours this morning worrying about her first day.  I should have just slept – everything was fine. 🙂

I spent part of the 2 hours she was gone on the computer (of course!), part of the time cleaning up, and the rest of the time playing a game with Lindsey.  It was a very relaxing 2 hours. 🙂

Now Lindsey is off to school and I’m ready to put Allison down for her nap.  I am loving this new lifestyle. 🙂  I love my girls, they are a joy, but the break is wonderful!

Happy Birthday Allison!

Allison Graduated!

From Birth to 3 that is.  She saw a B-3 physical therapist from Dec 06 (a month after bringing her home) until about March 07, because she was delayed in her gross motor and also had torticollis.  She quickly caught up and was dismissed from the program.  About a month after that I was concerned about her lack of speech so I called them back.  They gave me some things to work on and if things didn’t improve I should call them back.  As you know they didn’t improve so I called them.  After some delays because of my mom’s death and things, she started with a speech therapist and an occupational therapist I believe in August 07.  She will be 3 (can you believe it!) on Saturday, and last week Tuesday was her last day with her Birth-3 therapists.  They brought cupcakes and Allison enjoyed one as you can see….

Next week Monday she starts her speech class at a local public school.  She will go Monday and Wednesdays.  The class is only a little over an hour but with bus time there and back (yes a little bus will pick her up at the end of our driveway) she will be gone from 8-10.  I can’t say the break from the little mischief maker (she is still so INTO EVERYTHING!) will be so nice, and I am excited to see what kind of progress she will make after starting the class.   For supplies she needed a backpack that a folder will fit into (which means the backpack is almost bigger than her!), a folder and notebook, a change of clothes, and diapering supplies.  So cute.  No she is not potty trained yet.  Lindsey didn’t train until the day after she turned 3, which would be this Sunday for Allison, but I’m not holding out any hope that it will happen then!  Lindsey had no interest in potty training at her 3 year checkup on her 3rd birthday.   I remember telling the pediatrician that Lindsey had no interest.  The very next day Lindsey told me “I want to go on the big girl potty.” and that was about that!  She was fully trained, at night also, in less than a week.  Allison has made good progress in the right direction but I don’t think she is ready to fully train just yet.

Allison continues to make good progress with her speech.  She repeats so many more words than she ever has, and even tries to put 2 or 3 words together occasionally.  She has probably about 100 words that she uses on her own consistently.  Keeping in mind that last January she had 1 or 2, and I believe in the spring she had about 25.  She keeps moving in the right direction.  I’m sure she’ll need speech therapy for years to come but I have faith in her that she’ll catch up eventually.

Now if I could get Lindsey to talk just a little bit less……

I guess I haven’t been much better at keeping up with one blog than I was with several!  Our computer was basically out of commission for about the last 5 days so that’s my excuse.   It’s almost time to get Lindsey from the bus (school is going well!) but I thought I’d just post a few quick pictures.

101 Things Progress

October 1, 2008 at 8:00 am | Posted in 101 Things | 3 Comments

Month One – September 2008

Finished or made progress on these:

#4 Knit 10 pair of socks. – I’m working on a pair of Monkey socks, I’m halfway done with the toe decreases on the first one…..and then I have to make another one, sigh! 🙂  I’ve been working on this ONE sock for months!  Knitting time has been scarce lately.  (Although thinking about knitting, listening to knitting podcasts, browsing Ravelry, and other knitting related obsessions have NOT been scarce!)

#6 Get someone else to do this 101 things in 1001 days with me. – DONE!  My sister Ginny has her list done and started 9/29.  My other 2 sisters are working on theirs, and my cousin is going to do it too!

#9 Try 5 new recipes.I made Banana French Toast with Maple Cream Cheese Sauce.  It’s like a dessert!  I got the recipe from the Schwans catalog. It uses their French Baguette Bread. We had it for supper one night, but I’d like to make it after church sometime for brunch.

#10 Save $100 in change. Saved about $1.50 so far, LOL.

#30 Memorize 4 chapters of the Bible – 1 OT, 1 Psalm, 1 Proverb, 1 NT. Chose Isaiah 40 as my Old Testament chapter.  So far I have “Comfort, comfort my people” says your God” memorized from the first verse.  I can’t memorize like I used to!  I once memorized the first 3 chapters in James and the first 2 or 3 chapters in Ephesians, back when my brain was young. LOL

#31 Clean out the refrigerator/freezer once a month.I finally did this on 9/26.  Just under the wire for the month!

#33 Go on a date with Jay once a month. We went our for our 21st anniversary on the 19th.  We went out to eat at Uno Chicago Grill, then played mini-golf and went to Best Buy and picked out a new camera.

#34 Take a picture of me and Jay, or the whole family, every month.

#47    Photograph girls on the 30th of each month.

#56    Eat out at 5 new restaurants. I went to Door County with my sisters Sep 12-14.  Friday night we ate at Dal Santo, an Italian restaurant.  It was soooooooooo good!

#71    Get a new camera. Done!  Bought a Canon PowerShot A1000 IS on 9/21.

#82    Teach someone to knit (probably Lindsey but maybe a sister or friend) No progress yet BUT my sister Ginny (who is the one I got to do this list project with me) said she wants to learn.  Soon!

#91    Brush Chester twice a month. – I did it twice and he hated it (as usual!) both times.

#99    Finish reading through The Message Bible. – Just finished Psalms.  I started reading through this Bible, Genesis to Revelation, on 11/25/06!  It’s been slow going obviously.

No progress on this one:

#2    Learn fair isle knitting.

….but I changed “fair isle knitting” to 2-color knitting.

And I need help with this one….

#101    Find a TV series on DVD that I like and watch complete first season.

…..any recommendations on a good series???  Preferably a show with no more new episodes, but it doesn’t have to be.
